2018

Methods: A longitudinal questionnaire study was performed during 6 consecutive weeks among Belgian female volleyball (N = 57) and male handball players (N = 39). We administered a general questionnaire (i.e., need support/control) the first week, and game-specific questionnair…
Prejudice and need for relatedness expressed in the narratives of Finnish Roma early school leavers: A multi-case study
2023
AbstractSchool discontinuation in Finland is more common among the Finnish Roma than among the population as a whole. Within a study about school experiences of imprisoned early school leavers in Finland we had six participants with a Finnish Roma background, whose experiences of relatedness, and frustration of it, we examine in this paper. We conducted narrative interviews with the participants, applying a co-operative narrative interpretation to the meanings of what was told. After the field process, we interpreted the narrati…
Why Did They Leave School? A Self Determination Theory Perspective into Narratives of Finnish Early School Leavers
2021
The present study aims to provide insights into the experiences of early school leavers within the Finnish context. Self Determination Theory (SDT), more specifically the concept of frustration of the three basic psychological needs of competence, relatedness and autonomy, and the tendency of people to move towards more supporting environments, was used as an interpretative tool, along with contextual information. We identified three pathways out of school, differing in the locus of need thwarting circumstances and the availability of access to transfer into a more satisfying en…
